Ten Steps for Better Air Plasma Cut Quality
- Begin your cutting operation using high quality plasma parts from ESAB.
- Select the appropriate consumables for the job and the proper torch that will operate with your equipment.
- Always check the operator manual to identify the proper torch and parts.
- To optimize speed and productivity, use the largest nozzle and the highest amperage that the torch motion system will allow.
- To optimize cut quality, use a smaller nozzle and lower amperage setting. This will produce a narrower kerf and a finer cut.
- Carefully assemble the torch, making sure that all parts are aligned properly and fit together tightly.
- Keep parts clean. Use an unsoiled shop rag to prevent contamination.
- Lubricate O-rings just enough to put a shine on them.
- Since nozzles are sized according to amperage, set the amperage to 95% of the nozzle’s amperage rating. Underpowering a nozzle by setting the amperage too low causes a “soft arc” and a sloppy cut. Overpowering, on the other hand, will quickly wear out the nozzle.
- If your system allows a variety of plasma and secondary gases to be used, choose the gas that is best for the material and thickness you are working with and check the gas pressure and flow rate with the gas flowing through the torch.
